Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Storytelling is a cultural cornerstone in many African societies, serving as a medium for preserving history, teaching morals, and fostering community cohesion. In Argungu Local Government Area, Kebbi State, local storytelling traditions have historically played a central role in cultural identity. However, globalization, urbanization, and the dominance of mainstream media have contributed to the decline of this oral art form. Digital media platforms like YouTube, podcasts, and blogs offer unique opportunities to document, share, and revive these traditions. Studies indicate that digital tools can help preserve intangible cultural heritage by creating accessible archives and engaging younger audiences (Ogunleye & Danladi, 2023). This study examines how digital media can revitalize local storytelling traditions in Argungu, exploring its potential for cultural preservation and education.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Traditional storytelling in Argungu is at risk of being lost due to generational shifts and reduced interest in oral traditions. While digital media offers a platform to document and share these stories, its potential remains underexplored. Challenges such as lack of awareness, inadequate digital infrastructure, and limited participation from local storytellers hinder efforts to revive storytelling through digital means. This study explores how digital media can bridge these gaps, ensuring the preservation and promotion of Argungu’s storytelling heritage.
